VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Name: Kisuke Urahara
Age: Around 300; Physically in his early thirties
Physical Appearance: here
Point in Timeline: Chapter 666: Just after the fight with Askin.
World Description:
The Bleach world isn’t much different from the normal world, except… There are spirits. So basically your usual urban fantasy fare. Humans with a certain amount of spiritual sensitivity can see these spirits, which range from Pluses (normal human souls), Hollows (corrupted human souls), and Shinigami (highly powerful spirits who lead Pluses to Soul Society and fight and purify Hollows). Soul Society is the afterlife- most souls go there when they die. Soul Society is protected by the Gotei 13, the elite shinigami forces, divided into thirteen squads, controlled by a captain and vice captain. It is the shinigami’s duty to keep the balance between the living and non-living worlds, under the rule of the “Soul King,” who is the lynchpin that keeps everything together.
At the time of Urahara’s canon point, Soul Society has been invaded by an encroaching force of Quincy (humans with spiritual power so high it puts them on par with a shinigami), who were thought to be wiped out years ago by the shinigami who deemed them too dangerous to live, and nearly destroyed.
History/Background:
[JAZZ HANDS] Shounen Manga
Noteworthy Positive Characteristics:
Intelligence- Labeled a threat by the Quincy for his “perpetual adaptability,” Urahara’s mind is unmatched in all of Soul Society. He is both tactically cunning and a scientist of unparalleled skill, capable of creating things on the fly and making fast solutions to problems. It is said that he always comes into situations expecting a thousand what-ifs and planning for each and every one.
Loyalty He cares very deeply about people- all people. Though he is pragmatic and willing to throw people to the wolves for the sake of saving many, he has shown counterproductive behaviors to this. The most noteworthy is abandoning the group he came to the Soul King’s realm with during their fight with Gerard, so that he could chase after Ichigo and Yoruichi- though there was a clear plan there, it’s hard to imagine some of that was not motivated by his loyalty.
Sense of Humor Urahara’s sense of humor is childish and playful and a bit laconic, and while some would call this a negative trait simply due to how often he teases and pranks people just to get a reaction, it shows that underneath all of that battle-hardened genius, there’s a delightful person underneath and not all of that is an act.
Conviction- He deals in absolutes and everything he does, he does with 100% conviction. He never believes anything he sets his mind to do will fail, he never expects to lose a fight, and somehow none of this comes off as arrogance. It simply is what it is. If Urahara is in your corner with a few plans up his sleeve, then your victory is usually assured… Though it may have costs.
Self-Awareness- Urahara is well aware of how dangerous he is and while one would call guilt and a certain amount of self-loathing a negative trait, Urahara wields them as positive traits to set himself apart from people like Mayuri or Aizen. He knows how many steps away from a mad genius or a power-hungry god he is, and he does everything to maintain that he’s better, because his main ambition is improving life for everyone, not just for himself or because he can.
Noteworthy Negative Characteristics:
Manipulative- Urahara is an extreme control freak and likes to keep things moving towards any one of many outcomes he’s plotted a course for. He keeps things close to his chest and gives people only the amount of information they need to put them where he wants to go, even if the person would do whatever he asked if he were straightforward. He will often leave dangerous details out of explanations out of fear that people won’t do what he asks, which is called out numerous times and shows a lack of faith.
Flippant- Urahara seems to not take anything seriously, often approaching scenarios with the eyes of someone who just wants to see what happens or gauge a reaction. He stays out fights and often remarks from the sidelines that the people who are fighting don’t really need his help, even when they’re on the ropes. During Yoruichi’s fight with Askin, he dosed her with an antidote for the Quincy’s poison and then stayed on the sidelines making wry jokes and comments.
Deceptive- The open, polite, and endearing front that Urahara presents is just that- a front. He uses this to keep people off-balance and underestimating him. He tells people he’s only a humble shopkeeper and downplays his abilities, usually to avoid direct confrontation and to give him an excuse to stay on the sidelines.
Pragmatic- Urahara is pragmatic to a fault, because he knows sacrifices have to be made in certain situations and he often puts it on himself to make those sacrifices. He rarely lets his own feelings get in the way of a problem, which is probably one reason why he avoids involving himself in situations personally- the less emotionally involved he is, the more objective he can be, and it's a lot harder to maintain control over a situation that you're actively engaging in. He would also rather save many people than one person, and believes that to be an acceptable risk.
Powers/Abilities:
[JAZZ HANDS AGAIN] shounen manga
As far as nerfs are concerned, Urahara cannot do anything world-breaking, which means no Bankai, no opening portals to other worlds, etc. While he possesses a fairly unlimited pool of spiritual energy normally, he’ll find that it depletes at a faster rate in this world and he will have to rest/recharge more often if he pushes himself too hard. His durability will be decreased so he can be harmed by any weapon, not just weapons designed to harm spirits.
Character Fears: Theoretically, as a death god, he really doesn’t fear anything natural. In a purely emotional sense, he fears what’s in his own head and his capability of doing dark things to achieve goals and becoming a very dark person. He knows he’s capable of becoming a monster and has created and done things that are absolutely screwed up, and he can definitely get worse.
Personal Item: His Zanpakuto, Benihime (powers/nerfs detailed in the section above)
VOLUNTEER SAMPLES
Network Sample: Please show an instance of you communicating via text, audio, or video so that we may be able to recognize your typing style and tone in the future.
Action Log Sample: Please show an instance of you communicating in-person with someone else. Preferably, a situation where you might have been reflecting or contemplating more deeply on whatever subject matter was at hand. This will give the Zenith Corporation a better understanding of you as a person.
(Note: Samples can be written or linked!)
Time Spent Across Multiverse:
Urahara was recruited into ALASTAIR shortly after the Winter War with Aizen Sosuke that lost Ichigo Kurosaki his shinigami powers. His intention was to “buy time” to figure out a way to restore Ichigo’s powers. Though at first he didn’t trust ALASTAIR’s intentions, as time went on, he became to appreciate what they did for other worlds and became close to various other recruits. When ALASTAIR changed hands ane became Hathaway after the defeat of ALASTAIR’s rival Zymandis, he decided to join up with Hathaway as well, deciding that he enjoyed what he was doing here.
His time in both places allowed him some perspective on his tendency to put everything on his shoulders and allowed him to distribute the weight of everything among his teammates, though he’s… still a control freak. Just a control freak who is well aware he isn’t the only one who has to make the tough calls.
